Why did you decide to become a Dentist?
Dentistry has always been a big part of my life. My dad was a dentist and my mum was a dental hygienist, and I am proud to be the seventh generation of dentists in my family, with my dental ancestry dating back to a barber dentist in the mid-1800s. Growing up around dentistry gave me an early insight into the profession and, perhaps inevitably, I was drawn towards it myself.
What appealed to me was the combination of science, practical skill and, most importantly, working with people. I really enjoy the opportunity to make a tangible difference to someone’s confidence, oral health and wellbeing, while building relationships with patients over many years.
Where did you train?
I completed my undergraduate dental training at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2009. I then completed my vocational training in Yorkshire before spending some time working in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
I subsequently moved to London in 2012 with my wife and worked in general dental practice, gaining broad experience across different areas of dentistry.
Since qualifying, I have continued to invest heavily in postgraduate education, completing further training in restorative dentistry and orthodontics.
Tell us about your career so far.
I qualified as a dentist in 2009 and have spent my career working predominantly in private and mixed general dental practice.
I have undertaken extensive postgraduate training including Advanced Restorative Dentistry and Orthodontics.
These qualifications and experiences have allowed me to develop a broad skill set and treat increasingly complex cases, whilst still maintaining the general dental care that is so important to a family practice.
What aspect of dentistry do you enjoy most?
For me, it is the combination of the clinical and personal sides of dentistry. I particularly enjoy restorative and cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics, where careful planning and attention to detail can make a significant difference to a patient’s oral health, function and confidence.
I also really enjoy treating families and seeing patients over many years. Dentistry isn’t just about fixing individual teeth; it’s about getting to know people, understanding what matters to them and involving them in decisions about their treatment.
I take a lot of pride in creating a relaxed environment where patients feel listened to and comfortable, whatever treatment they are having.
Tell us about Hilltop Dental Practice.
I am incredibly excited to join Hilltop Dental and continue the hard work of Robert and Gillian, building on the strong foundations they have established and the excellent reputation they have created for the practice.
I look forward to continuing to provide dentistry that combines high-quality clinical care with the personal feel of a traditional family practice. I want patients to feel that they genuinely know their dentist and the team looking after them. Continuity of care is really important to me.
Clinically, I want to continue providing comprehensive general, restorative and orthodontic care, with an emphasis on prevention, long-term oral health and high standards of treatment. I also want to create an environment where my team members can flourish, develop their skills and enjoy coming to work.
What do you do when not at work?
Outside dentistry, family is the most important thing to me. I live locally in Cheltenham with my wife and our three children, so life outside work is usually fairly busy!
I enjoy keeping active, particularly running and swimming. I have been a keen fan of Leicester Tigers and Nottingham Forest football for many years, and enjoy watching both sports at club level.
I also coach my son’s Under-10s rugby team at our local club, Old Patesians. It’s a great way to spend time with my son, get involved in the local community and hopefully pass on some of the enjoyment I have had from sport.
What are your aims for the future?
My main aim is to continue working alongside Robert and the rest of the team to provide outstanding care for our patients, whilst helping to build on the excellent foundations already in place at Hilltop Dental.
Clinically, I want to continue developing my skills and keep learning throughout my career. Dentistry is constantly evolving, and I think it is important to remain curious and continue investing in education.
I also look forward to bringing further digital technology to Hilltop, helping to streamline patient care and make the most of new digital services to improve the patient experience.
For me, success means creating long-term relationships with patients, delivering excellent clinical care and maintaining a genuinely personal approach to dentistry.
