Fillings

At Hilltop Dental Practice, we provide high-quality, tooth-coloured fillings designed to blend naturally with your existing teeth. The material we use, known as composite, is strong, durable, and carefully matched to your tooth shade, ensuring a natural-looking result.

Costs and next steps

The cost of your filling will depend on the size of the area being treated and the complexity of the procedure. We will explain the cost clearly before treatment and include it in your personalised treatment plan.

If you would like to understand your options or have any questions, please let us know. We will be happy to talk everything through with you.

Top 10 FAQs about tooth-coloured fillings

1. What are tooth-coloured fillings?

Tooth-coloured fillings, also called composite or white fillings, are restorations made from a resin-based material that can be matched closely to the natural shade of your tooth.

2. When might I need a tooth-coloured filling?

You may need a filling if a tooth has decay, a small fracture, wear, or an old filling that needs replacing. Your dentist will assess the tooth and recommend the most suitable option for your needs.

3. Will the filling look natural?

Yes. Composite material is carefully shade-matched so it blends in with your surrounding teeth, making it a discreet choice for both front and back teeth.

4. Are tooth-coloured fillings strong?

Composite fillings are strong and durable, and they can be used in many areas of the mouth. Their suitability depends on the size and position of the cavity and the amount of tooth remaining.

5. How long do tooth-coloured fillings last?

The lifespan varies depending on the size of the filling, your bite, oral hygiene, diet, and regular dental care. With good maintenance, they can last for many years.

6. Is the treatment uncomfortable?

We will usually numb the area before treatment so you are comfortable. You may feel some pressure or vibration, but you should not feel pain during the procedure.

7. Can I eat after a tooth-coloured filling?

Composite fillings are set straight away using a special light, so you can usually eat and drink once you feel comfortable. If your mouth has been numbed, take care with hot drinks and chewing until full sensation returns.

8. Will my tooth feel sensitive afterwards?

Some short-term sensitivity to hot, cold, or biting can happen after a filling, especially if the cavity was deep. This often settles, but please contact us if sensitivity persists or worsens.

9. How do I look after a tooth-coloured filling?

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks, and attend regular dental check-ups so we can monitor the filling.

10. Are tooth-coloured fillings better than silver fillings?

Amalgam fillings are gradually being phased out worldwide due to environmental and health concerns related to their mercury content. While they can last many years, the metal expands and contracts with temperature changes, which may lead to:

  • Small gaps forming over time
  • Breakdown of the filling
  • Potential cracking of the surrounding tooth

Amalgam fillings are also not permitted for use in children under 15 years of age.
